For most normal-weight pregnant women, the right amount of calories is: About 1,800 calories per day during the first trimester. About 2,200 calories per day during the second trimester. About 2,400 calories per day during the third trimester. That being said pregnancy and calories are dependent on individuals and what they eat during the pregnancy. Some women can gain even up to 20 kilos during pregnancy and some can gain as little as 4 kilos during pregnancy
For the first six months of pregnancy (first and second trimesters), the calories required are the same as those needed before pregnancy i.e., approximately 2,000 calories per day. However, during the last three months of pregnancy (third trimester), an extra 200 calories a day, is required making a total of about 2,200 calories a day. Because women have different shapes and sizes, and some are more active than others, the recommendations about the amount of calories needed during pregnancy are based on averages.
