Anti-retroviral therapy (ART) is the use of HIV medicines to treat HIV infection. People on ART take a combination of HIV medicines (HIV regimen) every single day. Even though ARTs can’t cure HIV, they help people with HIV to live longer and to have healthier lives. ART also reduces the risk of HIV transmission. The good news is that researchers at MIT, Brigham and Women’s Hospital have developed a capsule that can deliver a week’s worth of the HIV drugs in a single dose. This advance could make it much easier for patients to adhere to the strict schedule of dosing required for the drug cocktails used to fight the virus.
